Q: How would a Ninja hold up against an MMA fighter?

That is a loaded question. I appreciate the fact that everyone wants to believe that the system they study is superior to all others, but what it really comes down to is the individual. Each person who studies a martial art is embarking on a very personal quest that must be respected. Not everyone practices the same style just as not everyone follows the same religion. I teach my students that they should offer sincere admiration for anyone who practices martial arts, regardless of style or affiliation. However, there are those you will meet on the path that are arrogant and boisterous who will claim they are unbeatable, their style is supreme or some other mindless banter. These braggarts should be avoided because all they are doing is creating unbalanced energy, and thus, bad karma.

However, with all that said, I do not want to avoid the root of the question. MMA fighting is nothing short of amazing, and the practitioners who study it can become formidable fighters. However, they fight within the confines of competitive rules...rules a Ninja would never adhere to. Ninjutsu is about winning. A Ninja would have no ego, no record to protect, no title to put on the line. A Ninja would simply size up their opponent look to gain the tactical advantage. What most would call dirty fighting, a Ninja would call superior strategy. If facing an opponent with greater strength or speed, the Ninja would not risk losing by trying to out-match those skills. Hair grabs, eye gouges and finger breaks would be among the first unarmed considerations, but to further enhance their options they would employ hidden needles, weighted chains or blinding powders. In the end, a Ninja would always use anything that would enable them to succeed. The other thing a Ninja would never do is allow a fight to take place in a pre-planned environment. This would allow their opponent to prepare. A Ninja would always attempt to strike first, and if at all possible, when their opponent was not expecting it. Stealth before Strength.
