Shinobi Zukin The shroud is not built to receive excessive damage, but there are four fundamental blocking techniques that can be applied to absorb the energy of an incoming attack. For straight punches, the Ninja applies the outside forearm block. The primary impact is received with the arm, but the cloth is held taught in preparation for follow-up entangles and chokes. For hooking punches, the Ninja applies the inside forearm block. Like the outside version, the impact is received with the forearm. For downward attacks, the Ninja applies a rising block that absorbs and decelerates the energy. For upward attacks, the Ninja steps slightly to the rear and applies a dropping block to the lower shin. The shroud can be flailed very effectively when it has a stone tied into one end. It can also deliver powerful close range attacks when it is wrapped tightly around the hand. The primary targets are high bone surfaces such as the base of the skull, the knee, the jaw, or the side of the head. The following techniques are fundamental examples of how these targets can be attacked.
STONE KNOT STRIKE #1 - DOKO UCHI / STRIKING THE BASE OF THE SKULL The opponent attacks with a straight punch. The Ninja steps to the outside and parries the opponents punch with a left forearm block. Using the circular momentum of the block, the Ninja allows the zukin to continue clockwise into a Fire Dragon posture. The Ninja then releases the left hand grip and launches a side strike from the left side that hits the opponent in the back of the head (doko uchi). STONE KNOT STRIKE #2 - SOKKI UCHI / STRIKING THE KNEE The opponent attacks with a straight punch. The Ninja steps to the inside and parries the punch with a right forearm block. The Ninja then spins to the left and executes a strike to the opponents stomach with a left elbow. The Ninja then pulls the weapon taught overhead and steps back with the left foot. The Ninja then swings the zukin from the right side and strikes the opponents inside knee with the stone knot (sokki uchi). STONE KNOT STRIKE #3 - KASUMI UCHI / STRIKING THE SIDE OF THE HEAD The opponent enters with a downward strike. The Ninja uses a rising block to stop the attack. The Ninja then slides a left foot in behind the opponents lead leg and uses the zukin to apply horizontal pressure above the knee, forcing him to the ground. The Ninja shuffles in and applies a downward strike to the side of the opponents head (kasumi uchi).
